12. Choose energy-efficient appliances.

Even though you ‘may’ pay more for energy-efficient appliances, you will save in 2 ways. 1) You’ll save money from your energy bills being lower, and 2) You’ll save energy on not being subjected to the anxiety of your future you looking down on you with disdain. Giving you the disappointed look of ‘Don’t. Just don’t go down the cheapo route on this purchase.’

To help you ‘Choose energy-efficient appliances,’ here’s a simple 2-step process:

1 - Look for the energy-efficient “Energy Star” certification on the appliance you want to buy.

2 - Dance a little jig, then enter your credit card with your non-dominant hand.

Your Future You will be smiling and may even give you an ‘energy star’ label for your efforts. (Consider adding this Energy Star title/label to your LinkedIn profile.)

P.S. - It’s also been reported that Corporate Housing helps people choose Energy Efficient Appliances because…that’s what’s in our units. While our clients won’t be purchasing these for their temporary homes, Corporate Housing companies like to focus on sustainability, and most companies provide furnished rentals with only energy star labeled appliances. Why?  a) it saves money, b) it saves the environment, and c) it prevents us from receiving disdain looks from Future You.

12. Choose energy-efficient appliances.

If you're not currently shopping around for new appliances, then maybe it's best to keep what you have for now. However, if you are in the market for an appliance or two, try to choose energy-efficient ones with the Energy Star certification.

This initial series will be focused on Simple Sustainable Actions - based on Stephane Omsanski’s article in Parade from 2021.
