16. Turn off the computer.

Wait, but read this first! Oh no, I hope it’s not too la—-... Okay, when you turn back on the computer, you can see that keeping your computer on, even in ‘sleep mode,’ is a massive energy vampire. Sucking electricity from future you and future generations is just not attractive.

The first few seconds of waking up a ‘sleep-mode’ computer usually means you’re responding or reacting to someone else’s work (i.e. replying to someone’s ‘urgent’ email). By turning off the computer at night and turning it back on, you can use those ‘computer-loading seconds’ to focus and write out what you want to accomplish that day.  This is a much better use of everyone’s energy.

To help you ‘Turn off the computer’ here’s a simple 2-step process:

1 - Press ‘power off.’

2 - Press ‘power on’ and while your computer is loading, write out your top three goals or tasks to accomplish during the day.

Your ‘Future You’ will be tuned in to your turning off efforts - not only for the saving of energy but also how you chose to redirect that energy to build the ‘Future You’ you want.

P.S. - It’s been reported that Corporate Housing providers can help you turn off your computer, but I’m not really sure how. If it’s your computer, we won’t touch it. If it’s a shared computer in a building, that’s a little easier to control. If you’re still reading…I would like to use this P.S. to thank you for playing with StayAttache for this series as we come to the end of 2022.  We will continue to write (with the aim to delight) and connect you to your Future You in 2023 and beyond. Happy (Almost) New Years!

16. Turn off the computer.

When the computer is not in use, make sure to fully turn it off. Running the computer while it's in sleep or dormant mode still requires energy and if that energy isn't being put to good use, it's being wasted.
